Essay outline format
Directions: Use the format below to create the outline for your Catcher essay. Each component of the outline should be completed in FULL sentences. Your supporting details should be specific and properly cited in MLA format (keep in mind, you cite quotes, paraphrases and summaries)
I. Introduction
a. The red hunting hat is a unique form or individuality in Holden's life
b. Holden wears the red hunting hat because it reminds him of his brother, Alli, who was a very nice guy.
i. He only puts it on when he is alone.
ii.When he wears it he feels better.
iii.At the end he gives his sister the hat to remember him when he is going to leave.
II. He only likes to put on the red hunting hat when he is alone.
a. "Anyway, it was December and all, and it was cold as a witch's teat, especially on top of that stupid hill"(Salinger 4).
i.When he was on top of the hill he is by himself instead of with everyone else at the game.
b. After he left, I put on my pajamas and bathrobe and my old red hunting hat. (Salinger 37)
i. It explains his low self esteem and how he thinks people will laugh at him if they see his hat.
c. "I like riding on trains, all I did was take off my red hunting hat and put it in my pocket." (Salinger 53)
